Businesses in the UK could turn to business loans to implement environmentally friendly systems, after new research reveals that British workplaces waste up to 310 million litres of water a day.
Offices are the worst offenders, with 35 litres of water wasted a day, 86 per cent as a result of flushing toilets is wasted by office workers, according to business advice group Envirowise.
Companies could save water by investing in push or spray taps and putting a litre bottle in older cistern toilets.
Dr Martin Gibson, programme director of Envirowise said: "If companies were to change their attitudes towards water by employing the simple reduction measures we are recommending, then not only would the water shortage be alleviated, they would also save themselves money.
"Most of the problem lies in the fact that UK companies do not see water as a true business cost. Envirowise, has, however, consistently shown businesses that there are clear financial savings to be had by taking steps to reduce water consumption."
Taking out a business loan could allow firms in the UK to invest in installing water saving procedures.
