Homes and businesses in central London could face further power cuts, warns energy supplier EDF.

More than 3,000 people, including small business owners, were left without power for four hour periods on Thursday, as air conditioning systems overloaded the power supply.

The power cuts forced traders along Oxford Street and Regent Street to closer early as cash tills, lighting and air conditioning services were wiped out.

A spokesman for EDF said: "EDF Energy engineers, who have been working round the clock, are making good progress on repairs to the local network for the Soho area."

He went on to say that because of the hot weather, demand on the electricity system is still high, meaning that further power cuts can not be ruled out.

Utility supply looks set to be a concern for small businesses, recent news from British Gas suggested that customers will face gas bill increases of 12.4 per cent and pay 9.4 per cent more for electricity.

The price of crude oil has also increased, perhaps suggesting that self-employed tradesmen could be affected by inflated petrol prices.
