Business loan to keep cool in heat wave
Reported on Fri, 21 Jul 2006
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has released guidelines to help small companies cope with the current heat wave and a business loan could help firms to cover the cost of any new developments.
Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) do have a duty to provide a reasonable temperature for their employees, but a lack of clarity around the subject could lead to friction in the workplace.
Mary Broughton, national health and safety chairman for the FSB, said: "In many businesses the hot weather has boosted sales, but it is important that firms take effective measures to make work comfortable and prevent absenteeism so that the firm can continue to operate without interruption or disputes.
"With fans and air-conditioning available to buy or rent at very competitive prices, this is an option that many businesses will choose to take."
The FSB advises SMEs to ensure that air-conditioning devices are well maintained and suggests investing in air cooling units and ceiling fans.
Taking out a business loan could help SMEs to cover the cost of making sure their premises remain cool during the hot summer months.
