A heavy workload is forcing UK managers to lose two weeks of annual leave each year, according to a new study, but taking out a business loan could give firms the chance to reorganise their business model.

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) claims that increases in the workload of British firms have left almost two-thirds (63 per cent) of managers failing to use up their holidays.

Despite accepting that a holiday acts as a critical way to reduce stress, 32 per cent of managers said a rising workload had rendered it impossible, while 25 per cent cited the danger of missed deadlines and 17 per cent lacked confidence in having anyone to whom they could hand over responsibility.

"Individuals clearly see the benefits of a break from work, but still appear unwilling to have a proper rest," claimed Jo Causon, CMI director of marketing and corporate affairs.

She added that "Britain continues to operate a long hours culture" and said that "companies need to sit up and address this because rigid policies may produce 'presenteeism' but do not guarantee high levels of performance".

A business loan could give managers time to research a new strategy for company operations and allow them to restructure the demands of the office workload.
