Business loan if affected by parking fines
Reported on Wed, 25 Jan 2006
Small businesses are being hampered by high parking charges and excessive restrictions, claims an industry organisation.
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) believes that many local councils do not provide enough town parking spaces and give out heavy handed parking fines to motorists, therefore deterring them from going to local businesses and shops.
Instead, people are more likely to head to large outlets and supermarkets away from a town or city that offer free, on-site parking.
Recent figures show that the number of parking fines issued in the UK doubled to 2.8 million between 2002 and 2004 and Nick Goulding, chief executive of the FPB, is concerned that small firms could be in serious trouble if parking restrictions are not relaxed.
He said: "The huge increase in the number of parking fines being doled out is extremely worrying for small businesses.
"Councils can rub their hands with glee watching the coffers being swelled by parking fines, but having an overzealous parking policy can only undermine trade in any town or city."
Small businesses that are suffering from this problem can take out a small business loan to help them recover. A business loan could also enable firms to move elsewhere if customer numbers are falling mainly due to parking restrictions and fines.
